Funny old game

It's a funny old summer, breeding all over the place, odd birds turning up where they shouldn't be, and familiar birds not being where they oughta be. If you get one of these on your lawn, do let someone know about it....

What on earth is it Jake? Not a wood warbler?

When I came across this pic, I didn't know the species either. The bill and and general shape suggested a member of the Ploceidae (the weaver finches, of which our own sparrows are members). Thanks to my friend Peter W, I now know it's an African species. Handsome fellow, isn't he? (The bird, I mean, though Peter's quite dashing too!)

Sure looks like a Society Finch male to me and not usually found in the wild.

You are right, the Society (Bengal) Finch is exclusively a cage bird, I think originally a North American species, but I could be wrong.
