Memento mori

Here's the deal.
My father's 72nd birthday was on March 26.
Three months later he was dead, from a cerebral haemorrhage.
My 72nd birthday is June 5 this year.
So, if you want to buy me a beer, please do it before the end of August.
And if I don't pop my clogs, I will happily - very happily! - buy you one back in September.
Deal?

My father died aged 63 from the same cause as your father. That whole year I walked on eggs and, in fact, made a living will and gave my lawyer the power of attorney as to what I wished done if I were in a permanent coma. But now I'm 68 -- nothing happened.

My mother died on the day after April Fool's Day -- it does make a person nervous -- but she was 89 at the time, so I've got 21 more years to make trouble, right?

Let's hope the money doesn't run out.

I am heartened by your comment, Mary, and especially by the point that we can go on making trouble!
Lang may your lum reek, good friend.

I can't quite make out if it's just your usual joke or you really feel like that, but these words made me sad. Please cheer up: there's still time for being frivolous! I wish I could buy you a dozen of six-packs of beer to celebrate the years that are behind (a bottle per year) and another dozen of six-packs for the years ahead!
